Let me just get a couple things out of the way before I get into the discussion here.
First, the Eve Online version of the IGS is understood to have no physical location. It's an online forum, much like its OOC version but presumably shinier and capable of carrying recorded audio or embedded video-- possibly holographic, even. This is our precedent.
However....
Second, a number of people have taken the idea of the DUST IGS as having a physical location and run with it, notably Galm Fae and the gents from PIE. This is a nifty enough thing that I'm disinclined to cry foul. However, it WOULD be a good thing for us to agree on where it is.
The PIE emissary gives some sense of being on a station (ornate but closed rooms, no windows). Which station?
The Shrine of Three Ways gives some sense of being on a planet (open air, actual weather). Which planet?
Considering the usual clone soldier method of transportation, any of these things could be true. One possibility that seems strong to me is that the facility is planetary, based at a facility in the Yulai system-- CONCORD sovereignty. This could make the PIE emissary essentially a cathedral, give Galm his weather, and give the setting a nicely diplomatic spin. The message boards themselves could still essentially be virtual, while also allowing us a physical venue in which to gather and talk. (Anybody feel like starting up a DUST IGS in-game channel to play the role of the facility concourse?)
Anybody care to suggest which planet this should be, assuming any of the system's planets are terrestrial? The star is blue, by the way. |

Galm Fae wrote:Yulai is always an option, though I have also considered the site itself to exist in Molden Heath. This would allow for a mercenary led Summit between various contracts all coexisting on "Planet Fight Club" without the meddling concerns of CONCORD or intervention by capsuleers. The facility itself could be located on the outskirts of the badlands in an arid climate, which would explain why a majority of the base is located indoors.
Either way, I am glad we are finally addressing this before we started to run into some real issues. I'm not sure we're exactly immune to meddling by CONCORD (commonly known as devs, or moderators). My only real difficulty with Molden Heath, though, is that it's going to be a pretty impermanent location. Planet Fight Club is all well and good, but the arrangement there is apt to collapse if and when more space opens up for us to move into.
Yulai allows for a bit more stability and, come to think of it, explains why we might eventually have a Matari emissary to go with the PIE one without having a war in the hallway. A downside of independent facilities is the difficulty of keeping the peace, and doing so fairly, without having an outside power performing the role. |

Either a station or a planetary facility seems workable. However, the planetary facility makes it much less likely to get drop-ins from capsuleers; we can get down there easily (clone transfer). The capsuleers, not so much (shuttle, with accompanying annoyances).
There's no reason that there might not be a little bit of both. The bar might even be at the CONCORD bureau station.
I'm liking Yulai III. We're fortunate, by the way, that the planet's stats made some kind of coherent sense; a fair few of those statistics, CCP has sometimes seemed to be pulling out of a hat. |

Any nook your imagination can paint it into, really. There's no one (or finite) vision of this place unless and until CCP builds an environment for it and starts renting out space. |

I think we should that individual wasn't from pie, hadn't met them before, and they're definitely not welcome back. As much as it pains me to say this is an unfortunate situation given the potential amount of ground support he can bring to the Amarr cause, politeness aside..... We can both say by looking in the records of the emissary we knew the victim was also fondling a concealed weapon.....
This is really kind of off-topic, but my usual feeling is that what happened, happened. Also, it's unlikely that a single stabbing in which someone may have died but nobody suffered permanent injury (heh) would be a major issue regardless of whether the incident occurred on a station or a planet.
Clone soldiers have a reputation for being a little ... touched.
Maikyl Metsar wrote:On the actual topic a lot of the earlier posts had it as a station. It was the shrine that started the on planet thing. Either is fine with me, I just might have to edit text on the cathedral as it is explicitly in space. If you want to do the half and half option perhaps have them be connected by a space elevator?
Supposedly, space elevators are being introduced into Eve at some point. Thing is, though, it's good to put our infrastructure in places where either (1) it can't reasonably be expected to actually be visible (planetside) or (2) it can be physically visited, at least on the outside (the CONCORD bureau).
I like both options, though putting it planetside seems to require a little less retconning. (I may partly have that impression because some of the retconning that would have to happen for the whole business to be on a station would be my own.) |
